Angelica was not feeling well. She didn't want to
wake up and go to work and face Suzanne Wickon and Cristal Purr's daily complaints.
"They'll probably complain even if I show up three hours
early," she thought, rolling over and trying to get out of bed, coughing.
"Angelica, darling, you look absolutely dreadful," commented
a tactless Sonja Romanakov as she walked past to grab her coat.
"You really should go to Cristal. She'd
fix you up and put on a new hairstyle. Actually you could really do with entirely different hair. Cristal sells
wigs you know. You could go with... hmmm... now what is the perfect hairstyle? How about ash blonde curls.
Those are so beautiful. I mean, just look at me!"
"Thanks Sonja," Angelica mumbled, coughing again and slipping
on her slippers.
"Oh it was nothing, dear older sister. Well I am off to roam the town now. I will give
your regards to Cristal and Suzanne." And Sonja flounced out of the house.
Angelica sighed and headed over to the stove, pulling on
a sweater. She fried some eggs and bacon and tried to keep from coughing.
There was a tickle in her throat that just wouldn't go away.
After breakfast was ready, Angelica ate it quickly,
had a shower, got dressed and headed downstairs to work.
The whole day at work, Angelica kept coughing.
She coughed while Mrs. Larson was browsing small cooking
aprons, she coughed while Mr. Wickon tried on his 13 new variously colored top hats, and she accidentally coughed when Suzanne
asked her if she was stupid.
Later, she started coughing so much that she actually had to duck under her desk so she
wouldn't distract the Samantha Parkington from buying three new dresses for Elizabeth.
As she rang up Samantha's purchases and put them in a Violet's
shopping bag, Samantha commented on her coughing.
"You should really go and see if Josefina has something she could
do about your cough," Samantha said, pointing to Angelica's throat, which she had started clutching subconsciously.
"She always has a miracle cure for anything. She got
my voice back with just a tea of chickweed and peaches! I suppose a cough would be a cinch for her to fix."
So after work that day, Angelica grabbed her purse and headed
out of town to the Montoya rancho. When she arrived, Josefina was there at the door to greet her.
What a surprise! I haven't seen you for such a long time. Come in, por favor."
"Well actually Josefina,
I have a really bad cough and I was wondering if you could help me out with it. Samantha says that you cure stuff like
that with plants and stuff."
"Si! I have this book of cures, you see. And
this is the page with the cure for coughing like yours. Are your symptoms hoarse voice, sore throat, swollen neck and
"Well yeah..." Angelica said.
"Then I have the perfect cure for you. You just make yourself
comfortable right here. I have to go and collect some ingredients."
And with that Josefina, swept out of the room, leaving
Angelica to sit on the couch by the warm fire, watching Francisca busily flip tortillas on the other side of the room.
Josefina headed up to the watchtower to check her storecupboards
for peppermint. She knew that you need peppermint for a cough cure, but wasn't sure if she had any.
her peppermint jar was almost entirely empty after last week. Mr. Montoya had gotten a coughing fit after being outside
in a rainstorm, so she had used up her last supplies then.
"I suppose I will just need to go and collect some fresh
leaves," Josefina thought, looking down at her remedy book.
Collect fresh peppermint leaves, which grow near la
Heading down to town square, Josefina immediately found
the peppermint bush looming over the horno in the yard of the sweet shop.
Josefina hurried over to the peppermint bush and began picking
"As long as I'm here I might as well get a lot," she said
to herself, and continued picking until her pot was full.
Then she returned to the rancho.
"Now what else do I need for this tea?" She said,
looking down at her book.
Mixing these with honey
and peppermint candy, make a tea.
Grabbing her jar of Clara's best peppermint's candies, Josefina tried hard to
remember where Francisca had been hiding the honey they traded with the Larsons for.
"Aha here it is!" Josefina said, finding the small
jar on top of the kitchen shelf and pulling a chair over to help her reach it.
Setting all her jars of ingredients down by the fire, Josefina
got out a pot and started adding ingredients.
once clockwise, then eight times counterclockwise and repeat for five minutes.
As she worked, Josefina hummed
a little song to keep Angelica entertained, since she looked pretty miserable.
After the five minutes passed, Josefina labeled out the
sweet-smelling peppermint tea into a nice mug and handed it to Angelica to drink.
"Now you just stay here and drink
this- next I have to give you a special bath!"
Lugging Mrs. Montoya's huge goat milk tub into the cocina,
Josefina took several trips out to the river with her water pitcher in order to fill it up.
She also stacked
wood on the fire to make sure the water would stay warm.
Give the patient a warm bath in peppermint, lemon,
chickweed, cottonwood root and bath salts.
Collecting more peppermint and the rest of the ingredients, Josefina
poured them in the bathwater before allowing Angelica to get in. A wonderful smell came wafting out of the tub as the
peppermint and lemon combined with the rose-scented bath salts.
Angelica smiled. This was much better
than cough syrup.
It didn't stop there. Angelica couldn't believe how
luxurious this was getting! Josefina's next instruction was:
Give the patient a nice tummy and neck rub with warm hands.
Angelica thoroughly enjoyed her neck rub
before realizing that she hadn't coughed once since she had gotten out of the bath.
"Thank you so much Josefina!" Angelica waved, as she
left the rancho, feeling much better and much more refreshed.
When she got home she felt so good that she even decided
to make her bed and put some stuff away that she hadn't even noticed before.
And that was definitely unusual.
